A simple idea, carried by character — a full-CG living plant for Hak je dag.
For Hak je Dag, we built a small character with a lot going on.
The bean plant might read as one creature, but it's really a collection of personalities — a cluster of curious heads, each reacting in its own way to the space and the people around it. Finding that balance between unity and individuality became the core of the animation.
In just a few seconds, there's a lot unfolding: subtle interactions with the environment, small moments of cause and effect, and a rhythm that had to feel effortless. Getting there meant tight direction across both set and post, shaping performance as much as visuals.
We teamed up with ACE, Dr Bowman and the Compound to bring this CG character to life — from design through to lighting and rendering.
All the dangling vines, swaying leaves and flopping branches really bring it to life. We built a fully procedural system that automatically applies the secondary motion with each animation revision.
The shading and lighting process started on set with the filming of plant references. Those were carefully matched and elevated in CG before rendering everything and handing it over to the Compound for final compositing.
"A simple idea, carried by character."
